New job posts in FSSAI and Direct Central Approach

Ministry of Health and Family has recently issued orders by creating 493 additional posts for the authority. Now the total staff of FSSAI would be jumped to 824 against the current strength i.e only 356. The new posts are basically for technical functions such as Technical Officers (255 posts) and Assistant Director Technical (60 posts) where the staff shortage is certainly acute. Moreover, 74 new posts of Central Food Safety Officers have been created. Through this, FSSAI would be able to deal with the Food Safety inspections and enforcement for Central Licensees directly despite entirely depending upon the states. These new job posts in FSSAI has provided it the greatest strength. In order to make our country modern and having robust food control system, the government has created new posts for functional areas such as Social and behavioral change communication, training and capacity building and new technologies. By this initiative, FSSAI would be able to attract a diverse talent pool with special skill sets required for multifarious activities that the Food Authority has taken up in recent years. It is considered the biggest measure of confidence in FSSAI's recent capacity by creating posts in specialized cadres and building awareness like food safety training and certification, a large-scale training program for food safety supervisors where 40000+ persons have been trained so far, Safe and Nutritious Food (SNF) initiatives at home/school/workplace etc and the recently introduced "Eat Right Movement". It is not less than a blessing to have a dedicated staff for such activities that will help FSSAI to institutionalize these activities for sustainable change on Food Safety and Healthy nutrition. In last December, The Central government has addressed one of the key concerns raised by the CAG in its performance report of FSSAI that was laid in the parliament. Besides, the Standing Committee of the Parliament on Health and Family Welfare in its report on FSSAI laid in the Parliament. Indeed, the creation of these posts is in line with the National Health Policy released in March that focused on the need for preventive health care and specifically mentions the need to strengthen human resources in FSSAI.
