Also, there are several guidelines that have been issued with regard to the grant, operation, and renewal along with the cancellation of the certification of BIS registration for jewelers .
The BIS hallmarking scheme was initiated by the Government of India in the year 2000 for gold metal and silver in the year 2005 to protect the Indian citizens from any type of adulteration as well as obligating all jewelers to uphold the legal standards of purity. The BIS hallmarking scheme comprises granting the certification for the jewelers along with recognition of Assaying & Hallmarking.
There was also the issuance of the quality control order for the gold metal hallmarking in the year 2020. And this was enforced from the year 2021. So, from that year, it became mandatory for all the jewelers who sold gold metal to register with the BIS authority along with hallmarking gold metal within the grades of 14, 18 as well as 22 carats.
The hallmarks certificate is meant to confirm that the gold, as well as the silver metal that is being sold by the jewelers, is completely genuine. So, any jeweler who intends to seek such marks on the products is required to apply for the BIS registration.
